Client: R.C Diocese Cathedral, Salford.

Brief: Renovate and replace the corners, access platform and elevations.

Contract period: 2 months.

With an extensive renovation brief spanning three essential areas of this fascinating build, we set to first on the corners, replacing the cast iron pins and connecting the timber posts and horizontal supports. On investigation, it was found that the old timber corner posts and horizontal timber ties had suffered from adverse weathering due to the expansion of the aged cast iron pins. With the access platform, it was decided that a complete removal would provide the optimum route to a meticulous renovation. Working around the clock, the access platform was carefully rotated and the pad stone painstakingly bedded to produce the desired effect. The elevations of the house lantern provided our teams with a menu of tasks to put their experience to.

This analysis found that 22 timber encasements required complete replacement, with each replica being made to exactly match the original. In addition, all the stained glass was carefully removed to be degreased, cleaned and reinstated to its full glory Renovation work of the elevations continued with the replacement of 67 leaded stops in situ and in various colours; the removal and repair of broken stops; installation of 11 stained glass roses; and the supply and fitting of 4mm clear glass covering leaded lights.
