Client: St. Willibrord’s Roman Catholic Church, Clayton.

Brief: New rood screen including oak double doors.

Contract period: 2 months.

An architecturally intriguing building, St. Willibrord’s Roman Catholic Church in Clayton required a new rood screen as part of an internal restoration program. The rood screen was designed to be three metres high and crafted in solid oak; the length was calculated at 20 metres and included hand-crafted double doors. New decorative leaded lights were also commissioned to a specific geometrical design, and all fixed with non-ferrous metal stay bars let into the metal framing. The screen consisted of eight lights, each constructed using mixed textures of clear and white antique glass. Six lights were then crafted for the screen doors, each using 5mm toughened safety, clear restoration glass.

With a wedding date set in the church’s calendar, our team was required to complete the project within 4 weeks from initiation to finish. This target was achieved, with all the oak work and build manufacturing developed off-site. The only access was through a 1.5m by 2m external door into the church which resulted in the careful and precision delivery of each item to retain the natural perfection of the materials
